Brianna Curtis, calciatrice americana racconta la sua storia

Hi Brianna, when did you start to play soccer?

I started playing soccer when I was 4 years old. And it really started as a small club where kids could go to burn off some energy before bed time. But it quickly turned into a competitive soccer I grew to love!

tell us more about your career in youth soccer …

I played for Evergreen “Stingers” for about 14 years before I made it onto a traveling team. Freshman year of high school I played for Colorado Rush. Which was I. The super league and the ECNL league (elites club national league), I played college for my high school and basketball for my high school as well.

you had to be very busy, no?

The Rush team meant that I trained everyday for about 2 hours and then would play two games every weekend. It was a lot especially at a young age. And the traveling is a huge reason why I am who I am today along with how I got to Italy.

it was a good team?

We won nationals my freshman year so a lot of college scouts noticed my team. I verbally committed to play SEC D1 soccer at the University of Arkansas at 16. I went there for a semester in 2015 and then transferred to Iowa state quickly after where I played my last 3 years in the Big12 D1 league. 

You love this game, do ya?

The soccer is amazing.

Have you ever paid to play?

As a student athlete I never had to pay for my sport or any other collegiate sports.

Are youth leagues always associated with schools?

Youth teams are either club or school affiliated. For instances. You can play for your high school and a local club. in college you are either on the school team (meaning you can get scholarship and represent the school) or you are on the club team where players are far less competitive and have to pay for their own flights, trips, tournaments etc.
It depends on the college and popularity of women’s soccer in the location.

does americans pay to watch school championship games?

At university of Arkansas it cost money to see the women’s soccer team play (making us a revenue sport) while at Iowa state you could watch for free.

and what did you do upon your graduation?

Upon graduation I was committed to play for Oxford Brookes university while I would have received masters as well. But Soccer Management reached out to me and I knew I had to go. I knew that being 22 and forcing myself to be uncomfortable, learn a new language and pursue my love for coaching was the best choice for me. Especially after having coached at a highschool in Iowa I was the importance sports has on the lives of children (especially girls) and the structure it can provide for them. 

what about your italian experience?

Now, once I arrived to Italy it was clear that it was going to be a challenge. In a very new way. The soccer was amazing, but the program allows for something I haven’t experience since I was little: play with boys. In the mornings we train as an SMI group, so I play against males the same age as me, from different countries and frankly a lot bigger than me. And I love it. It is amazing competition and forces me to grow as a player.

do amateur championships exist in america?

Yes there are non-competitive championships depends on the league you’re in.

Have you ever heard of the indoor soccer that is played 5vs5 which is taught in soccer schools in latin america to improve the technique?

Oh yes in America we call it futsal, and you’re right. It promotes coerver soccer and tika taka soccer. I agree.

What differences have you noticed between Italian and American women’s football?

With regard to the soccer coaching and playing in women’s soccer (in Italy) as a whole; it is smarter than American soccer. I would say that in America we are know for being athletes. We “out athletic” if you will, our opponents. We run for days, kick it and run, tackle and run, run run run. But here everyone loves soccer so much they focus on developing strong soccer IQs and technical ability at a young age. The amount of Coever style soccer coaching used here is impressive and refreshing to be around. It was the style I was lucky enough to be around in the Colorado Rush program, which brought us wild success. Much like it has brought success to my current team here in Italy. We won our game last night 10-0 and are looking to moving up divisions.

Why did you choose Italy as a study destination?

I chose Italy because soccer is my heart and it is an amazing location (a dream for most Americans) and learning Italian was a goal of mine. I love Rome and am learning quickly.

what is your opinion about women’s sport?

I also agree that many amazing accomplishments in women’s sports but soccer in particular, have been minimized from the public eye. I studied abroad in Costa Rica as well, and so I do have an interesting collection of men’s perspectives from around the world and in different cultures.

Do you think women’s sport is hidden from the male chauvinist culture?

Sadly yes, that does limit experience but the goal is to increase popularity through accomplishments and viewership! Women’s sports are on the come up so I am happy to know you are participating to helping it.

Ciao Brianna, come inizia la tua storia di calciatrice?

Ho iniziato a giocare a calcio quando avevo 4 anni. Ed è iniziato tutto in un piccolo club dove i bambini potevano andare a bruciare un po’ di energia prima di coricarsi. Ma sono passata rapidamente al calcio competitivo e l’ho imparato ad amare!

dicci qualcosa della tua carriera nel calcio competitivo…

Ho giocato negli Evergreen “Stingers” per circa 14 anni prima di entrare in una squadra lontano casa. Il primo anno di liceo ho giocato per i Colorado Rush. Ciò significava giocare La super league e la ECNL league (elites club national league) per il mio liceo, dove ho giocato anche a basket!

DEVI ESSERE stata MOLTO OCCUPATa…

Giocare per il team di Rush voleva dire allenamenti ogni giorno per circa 2 ore. A quei tempi giocavo due partite ogni fine settimana. È stato molto impegnativo, soprattutto per la giovane età. Penso che “il viaggio” sia la grande ragione per cui sono quello che sono oggi.  Penso che sia per questo che mi ha spinto a venire in Italia.

i rush erano una buona squadra?

Abbiamo vinto i nazionali il mio primo anno, quindi molti osservatori del college hanno notato la mia squadra. Ero sempre impegnatissima a giocare a calcio. A 16 anni ho giocato in SEC D1 all’Università dell’Arkansas per un semestre (nel 2015) e poi mi sono trasferita nello stato dell’ Iowa dove ho giocato i miei ultimi 3 anni nella lega Big12 D1.

Ami questo sport, vero?

Il calcio è stato fantastico.

Hai mai pagato per giocare nelle giovanili?

In quanto studentessa atleta non ho mai dovuto pagare per praticare il calcio o qualsiasi altro sport collegiale.

le squadre giovanili sono sempre collegate alle scuole?

Le squadre giovanili sono affiliate al club o alla scuola. Per esempio, puoi giocare per il tuo liceo e un club locale. Al college fai parte della squadra della scuola (il che significa che puoi ottenere una borsa di studio e rappresentare la scuola), mentre se sei nella squadra del club, questi sono molto meno competitivi e devono pagare per i propri voli, viaggi, tornei ecc.
Il trattamento dipende soprattutto dal college e dalla popolarità del calcio femminile nella specifica località.

si paga per vedere le partite scolastiche?

All’Università dell’Arkansas si paga per vedere le partite del calcio femminile (rendendoci uno sport che procura entrate economiche per la scuola) mentre in Iowa state l’ingresso è libero.

dopo la laurea cosa hai deciso di fare?

Dopo la laurea avevo preso l’impegno di giocare per l’università di Oxford Brookes mentre avrei conseguito i master, ma Soccer Management mi ha contattata per venire in Italia per conseguirlo a Roma. Sapevo che non avrei dovuto perdere l’occasione. Pur sapendo che a 22 anni sarei dovuta uscire dalla mia zona di confort e che avrei dovuto imparare una nuova lingua per perseguire i miei scopi in nome dell’amore per il coaching, ero certa che sarebbe stata la scelta migliore per la mia vita. Certezza maturata dopo la mia esperienza alla scuola superiore in Iowa, dove ho scoperto l’importanza che lo sport ha sulla vita dei bambini (in particolare le ragazze) e sulla formazione che può fornire loro.

cosa ci puoi dire della tua esperienza in Italia?

Ora sono arrivata in Italia. Era chiaro che sarebbe stata una sfida in un mondo completamente nuovo. Il calcio qui è fantastico. Ciò che non mi aspettavo, era di giocare con i ragazzi, cosa che non facevo da quando ero piccola! Al mattino ci alleniamo tutti insieme noi del gruppo SMI, quindi gioco contro maschi della mia stessa età e di paesi diversi… francamente molto più grandi di me!!!! Ed amo questa cosa. È una sfida straordinaria che mi costringe a crescere come giocatrice.

esistono campionati amatoriali ?

Sì esistono anche campionati non competitivi.

hai mai sentito parlare del calcio a 5 indoor utilizzato dai sudamericani per migliorare la tecnica nelle scuole calcio?

Oh, sì! In America lo chiamiamo futsal. Hai ragione, promuove il metodo di insengamento Coerver ed il tika taka. Sono d’accordo che aiuti molto a migliorare la tecnica individuale.

Che differenze ci sono tra il calcio femminile italiano e statunitense?

Per quanto riguarda l’allenamento e il gioco, il calcio femminile in Italia, nel suo insieme, è più intelligente del calcio americano. Direi che in America siamo conosciuti per essere atleti. Sovrastiamo atleticamente i nostri avversari. Corriamo per giorni, calciamo e corriamo, facciamo interventi in scivolata e corriamo, corriamo, corriamo e corriamo. Qui tutti amano il calcio così tanto che si concentrano sullo sviluppo dell’intelligenza tattica del calcio allenando le abilità tecniche già in giovane età. La quantità di allenamenti di calcio in stile Coever, qui, è veramente impressionante! Svolgerlo mi rinfresca!!! Mi ricorda lo stile di allenamento utilizzato dai Colorado Rush, che ci ha procurato un successo incredibile. Proprio come sta portando successo alla mia squadra attuale qui in Italia. Abbiamo vinto ieri sera per 10-0 e stiamo cercando di fare ancora meglio.

perchè hai scelto l’italia come meta di studio?

Ho scelto l’Italia perché il calcio è nel mio cuore e questo paese ne è una patria. Penso che sia un paese meraviglioso e per molti americani è un sogno. Avevo l’obiettivo personale di imparare l’italiano, amo Roma che me lo sta facendo imparare in fretta.

Come pensi che sia visto lo sport femminile nel mondo?

Avendo studiato all’estero, anche in Costa Rica, ho potuto inquadrare le prospettive degli uomini di tutte le parti del mondo e delle più varie culture. Posso quindi dire che nonostante i grandi successi dello sport femminile, dagli uomini e dalla nostra società questi vengono sempre di minimizzati, soprattutto nel calcio.

pensi che venga un po’ oscurato dalla nostra cultura che predilige lo sport maschile?

Purtroppo sì, questo è un limite per l’esperienza, ma l’obiettivo è aumentare la popolarità attraverso la sua pratica ed aumentandone la visibilità! Lo sport femminile è in crescita e sono felice di averti conosciuto perché so che sei una persona che si impegna ne suo sviluppo.
